b. 28 January 1950; succeeded 6 March 1999 as Ruler of Bahrain on the death of his father, Sheikh Isa bin Sulman al-Khalifa; acceded as Amir 6 March 1999; proclaimed King 14 February 2002; married 9 October 1968, Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim al-Khalifa; three sons, one daughter; four sons, four daughters with his three other wives.

Crown Prince:

HRH Sheikh Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, b. 21 October 1969; married Hala bint D'aij al-Khalifa; two sons, two daughters.
