ROOTES Christopher
British political scientist and academicProfessor of Environmental Politics and Political Sociology
and Director of the Centre for the Study of Social and Political Movements, University of Kent, Canterbury
Career: Christopher Rootes is Professor of Environmental Politics and
Political Sociology and Director of the Centre for the Study of Social and
Political Movements at the University of Kent, Canterbury. His principal research
interests are in environmental protest, environmental movements, and the interactions
between environmental campaigners and industry, government and governmental
agencies. In addition to his established interests in cross-nationally comparative
research on protest, social movements and political participation, he is increasingly
interested in the formation and implementation of environmental policy, particularly
in respect of climate change. Professor Rootes founded the Centre for the
Study of Social and Political Movements. He is co-editor of the journal Environmental
Politics (see url below), International Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal
of Sociology and a member of the Editorial Boards of Mobilization: The International
Journal of Research and Theory about Social Movements, Protest, and Collective
Behavior and Social Movement Studies.
Publications include: Environmental Movements: Local, National and Global (editor) 1999, Environmental Protest in Western Europe (editor) 2003 (updated 2007); numerous articles in professional journals
