Career: JoAnn McGregor is Lecturer in the Department of Geography at University
College London. Previously she was Lecturer in Human Geography at the University
of Reading from 2002–06. She began her professional career as a Research
Assistant in the Refugee Studies Programme at Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford
from 1989–93 and later at the Centre for Development Studies, University
College Swansea from 1993–94. She was then Researcher/Senior Associate
Member of St Antony’s College, Oxford from 1994–98 and Temporary
Lecturer at Reading from 1998–99 before she was promoted to Research
Fellow/Lecturer in 1999. Dr McGregor has been a Researcher on the World Food
Programme/CEC Project ‘Livelihood and Integration of Mozambican Refugees
in Swaziland’ from 1990–91 and a DFID/CEC consultant for evaluation
of development projects in Tanzania run by the NGO Concern in 1993. More recently
she has acted as consultant for various TV/radio documentaries on Zimbabwe
(BBC3, BBC4, Panorama, BBC Scotland and others) from 2000–05. Dr McGregor’s
research interests are in the politics and history of southern Africa, conflict,
migration and refugees, environment and development. She was a member of the
Council of the Royal Africa Society from 2000–06, and is a member of
the Governing Council of the British Institute in East Africa and of the Council
of the African Studies Association (UK), both since 2004. She was a member
of the Executive Committee of the Britain Zimbabwe Society from 1991–95
and again since 2004. Dr McGregor is a member of the Institute for British
Geographers and of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Southern African
Studies (see url below) since 1994 and has been its co-editor since 2006.
She was Reviews Editor for African Affairs from 2000–06 and is now a
member of its Editorial Board.
Publications include: Violence and Memory: One Hundred Years in the ‘Dark Forests’ of Matabeleland, Zimbabwe (co-author) 2000, Social History and African Environments (co-editor) 2003; several book chapters and numerous articles in professional journals
