McALLISTER Ian

Professor of Political Science in the Research School of Social Sciences, Institute of Advanced Studies, Australian National University

Career: Ian McAllister has been Professor of Political Science in the Research School of Social Sciences, Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) since 1997 and was Director of the School from 1997–2004. Professor McAllister began his academic career as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies at The Queen’s University of Belfast from 1976–77. Then he was Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow from 1977–80. He moved to Australia in 1980 to take up a post as Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the Research School of Social Sciences of the ANU. In 1983 he was made Senior Research Fellow. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Politics at University College, University of New South Wales, a post he held until 1996. He was briefly Professor of Government at the University of Manchester from 1996–97 until his appointment at the Institute of Advanced Studies. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and has held visiting positions at the Center for the Study of Democracy, University of California, Irvine, the Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research, Queen’s University of Belfast and the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation, University of Warwick. In 2006 he was a POSC Fellow at the East-West Center, University of Hawaii, USA. Ian McAllister is Editor of the Australian Journal of Political Science (see url below) and is Chair of the Planning Committee for the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems. He has been a Co-Director of the Australian Election Study since it was established in 1987.
