Career: John Lovering has been Professor of Urban Development and Governance in the School of City and Regional Planning at Cardiff University since 1995 where he is also a member of the Urban and Regional Governance Research Group. He started as a British Rail clerk at Waterloo Station from 1966–69 before becoming a Research Officer in the Department of Economics at Bangor University in 1975. From 1978 he was employed as a Researcher at North Wales Employment Research Centre, Llanrwst until 1981. He spent several years in the early eighties as a musician, guitarist and song-writer before returning to academic life as a Research Fellow at the School for Advanced Urban Studies at University of Bristol from 1982–84 and Senior Research Fellow from 1984–92. He was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Liverpool in 1992 before taking up the post of Professor of Geography at the University of Hull from 1993–94. His research interests include urban development and governance, the cultural industries and urban ‘regeneration’, labour market structure and change at various scales, regional economic development and policies, the Welsh economy, industrial restructuring (especially in the defence industry), theories of globalization and their policy implications, international political economy, the history and theory of the state, the philosophy of social research, Marxism poststructuralism, critical realism, the development of Turkey and Istanbul. John Lovering has been Managing Editor of the journal International Planning Studies (see url below) since 2005.


Publications include: several book chapters and numerous articles in professional journals
