Career: Alan Lew has been Professor and Chairman of the Department of
Geography, Planning and Recreation, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences,
Northern Arizona University (NAU) since 1999. He was appointed Assistant Professor
in 1986 and Associate Professor with tenure in 1992. He was Coordinator of
the MA degree in Rural Geography Program at NAU from 1990–96, and since
2001, and was Associate Chairman of the Department of Geography, Planning
and Recreation at NAU from 1999–2000. He was Visiting Professor, Department
of Geography, University of Tübingen, Federal Republic of Germany in
1989 and Visiting Fellow at the National University of Singapore from 1997–98.
Later, he was Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Asian Tourism Research
and Education in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic
University in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He is a member of the Recreation, Tourism
and Sport Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers,
the Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change, the
International Geographical Union and the Arizona Planning Association. Alan
Lew has been Editor of the journal Tourism Geographies (see url below) since
1998.
Publications include: Tourism and Gaming on American Indian Lands (co-editor) 1998, Sustainable Tourism: A Geographical Perspective (co-author) 1998, Tourism in China (co-author) 2002, A Companion to Tourism (co-editor) 2004, Seductions of Place: Geographical Perspectives on Globalization and Touristed Landscapes (co-editor) 2005; numerous articles in professional journals
