Career: Alice Hills is Professor of Conflict and Security in the School of Politics and International Studies at the University of Leeds, which she joined in 2004. Previously she taught defence studies for King's College, London at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, lectured in policing and public safety at the University of Leicester, acted as a course director in crisis management for the Home Office, and was a research assistant in the Cabinet Office. She was a member of the International Border Security Advisory Board at the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Singapore, and a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Defence Studies, University of London. She provided written evidence to the House of Commons Defence Committee on The Strategic Defence Review, and on the implications of 11 September 2001, and has also presented reports and briefs to a number of organizations, including the UK Ministry of Defence. Her current external positions include membership of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations' International Policing Advisory Council. Professor Hills's personal interests relate to security governance and new security issues. The core of her research focus is to develop a comparative framework for analysing why police and paramilitary forces evolve as they do, and what explains their interaction with governments, militaries and civil society in fragile states. Alice Hills is co-editor of the journal Civil Wars (see url below).
