Career: C. Cindy Fan is Professor in the Department of Geography and Professor
and Chair of the Department of Asian American Studies, University of California,
Los Angeles. She began her career as a teacher at St Paul's Convent School
in Hong Kong from 1981–82. She was then a teaching assistant at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1982–85. Following her move to
the United States, she became a Graduate Teaching and Research Associate at
Ohio State University in 1985. In 1989 she was appointed Assistant Professor
of Geography at UCLA and Associate Professor of Geography from 1995–2001.
She was Chair of the Asian American Studies Interdepartmental Program at UCLA
from 1997–2001. She has been Professor of Geography at UCLA since 2001
and Professor and Chair of the Department of Asian American Studies since
2005. Her research interests include population geography, regional development,
post-Mao China (regional policy, migration, inequality, gender), ethnicity
and quantitative methods. Professor Fan was editor of Eurasian Geography and
Economics from 2001–05 and has been Senior Contributing Editor since
2006. She has been a member of the editorial board of Social Science Quarterly
since 1999, and of China: An International Journal and Geographical Analysis
since 2002. C. Cindy Fan is co-editor of Regional Studies (see url below).
