Career: Richard Cowell is a Lecturer in Environmental Policy and Planning at Cardiff University and has worked in CPLAN since 1996. Prior to his appointment, he worked as a researcher for the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development (UK CEED), where he has been a Research Associate since 1996. He was a Lecturer in the Environment and Development MSc degree programme at the University of Cambridge between 1996 and 1997 and has been a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Design and the Built Environment also at Cambridge since 1997. His research interests cover theoretical and political aspects of the relationship between public policy and sustainable development, with particular reference to land use planning, habitat creation, environmental values, public participation and policy integration. Richard Cowell is a member of the Centre for Local and Regional Government Research, was an adviser to the Economics, Sustainability and Planning Working Group of the Town and Country Planning Association during 1993–94, has been an adviser/member of Art and Place since 1996 and a member of the IUCN – The World Conservation Union UK Committee Superquarry Working Group since 1997. He has been co-editor of Journal of Environmental Policy & Planning (see url below) since 1997.


Publications include: Land and Limits: Interpreting Sustainability in the Planning Process 2002; numerous articles in professional journals
