Education: PhD, University of London

Career: Janet Bujra is Honorary Reader in Peace Studies in the International Centre for Participation Studies at the University of Bradford. She recently retired as Director of Postgraduate Research but still runs the Methods Workshop and one of the research seminars on Politics and Social Change. Her research interests include class and gender relations, the social context of HIV/AIDS, ethnic relations, the politics of conflict and peace, and social theory. Following a lifetime of research in and around Africa, Janet Bujra is now coordinating a new, collaborative research project on the 2001 Riots in Bradford, funded by the Safer Cities Initiative. The research aims to uncover the rioters' construction of a narrative of motives for their actions as compared with the narratives of other key actors in the situation. It will also address issues around resolving continuing conflicts of interest and perspective in a forthcoming series of workshops with participants. Janet has continued her work in East Africa, with study around conflict in Kenya's Rift Valley, the organization of conference workshops on globalisation and localisation of the AIDS problem, and presentations to UNAIDS and DIFD on the implications and dilemmas for gender and generational relations of the AIDS crisis in Africa. Janet Bujra is co-editor of the journal Review of African Political Economy (see url below).

Publications include: Women United, Women Divided: Female Solidarity in Cross-cultural Perspective (co-editor) 1978, AIDS, Sexuality and Gender in Africa (co-author) 2000, Serving Class: Masculinity and the Feminisation of Domestic Service in Tanzania 2000; numerous articles in professional journals
