Career: Bob Evans is Director of the Sustainable Cities Research Institute at Northumbria University. Professor Evans moved to Northumbria from South Bank University where he was Director of the Centre for Local Environmental Policies and Strategies and Head of the Department of Urban and Environmental Studies from 1977 until 2002. Before his move to higher education, he worked as a community planner for Golborne Neighbourhood Council, North Kensington, London from 1972–73, as a Planning Assistant with the London Borough of Lewisham from 1973–74 and as a Senior Planner/Principal Planner with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets from 1974–77. He is the UK Chairman of the European Union’s Working Group on Urban Environmental Management and he was a member of the Award Panel for the 2003 European Sustainable Cities and Towns Award. He is co-founder and co-editor of Local Environment: The International Journal of Justice and Sustainability (see url below).


Publications include: several books, including Experts and Environmental Planning 1995, Local Environmental Policies and Strategies (co-author) 1994, Environmental Planning and Sustainability 1996, Town Planning into the 21st Century 1997, Just Sustainabilities – Development in an Unequal World (co-editor) 2002, Governing Sustainable Cities 2004; numerous book chapters and articles on land use planning, sustainability, environmental policy and local governance
