Career: Louis Albrechts is Professor of Planning at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He was formerly Visiting Professor at the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, Lille in France and Poznań in Poland. He has also been a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Earth and Geographical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. Professor Albrechts has had long experience in strategic land use and transport planning for the Flanders region and in Europe. He teaches strategic spatial planning, planning for sustainable development and regional design. Professor Albrechts’ research interests include: the practice and nature of strategic spatial planning, the link between plan and implementation, planning as a creative process, issues of power in planning, the gap between plan-making, political decision-making and implementation, sustainability in strategic planning, and diversity in planning. Professor Albrechts is also founder and co-editor of the international journal European Planning Studies (see url below). He was Chairman of the first World Planning Schools Congress held in Shanghai and the second World Congress held in Mexico in 2006. He is a member and Past President of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and has been a Corresponding member of the German Academy for Research and Planning (Deutsche Akademie für Raumforschung und Landesplanung) since 1982. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the global Research Network on Human Settlements (HS-Net) since 2007.

Honours and awards: First Honorary Member of the Flemish Association for Planning 2003, Second Honorary Member of the Association European Schools of Planning 2006; Honourable Mention (category Regional Plans), Urban and Regional Planning European Council of Town Planners and European Commission 1997–98
